Currently I am the Coordinator of the BSN Program, Nursing Resource Centre and Simulation Lab. I have also taught Nursing 1130, Nursing 1141, Nursing 2141 and labs in Semesters 1 -4. I have been involved in studies using high-fidelity simulation with new graduates as well as for competency assessments with registered nurses. My other passions are theatre and barbershop singing.

During the past 5 years, I have taught the following semesters and courses: Semester 2 Lab and Clinical, Semester 6 Community & Nursing Inquiry, Semester 8 and CPE 5, and Final Preceptorship. I am responsible for providing in-services to faculty, staff and students in relations to simulation and creating case studies for implementation into different Community & Health Studies curriculum.

My passion for learning and teaching has led me through a career in Obstetrics and Critical Care nursing with further development in leadership. Work with CNA/ CPHA / CIDA led to international development for nurses in developing countries, implementation of leadership and conflict programs, critical incident stress management , and Risk Management and policy review advisement for various organizations. Within the community I provide volunteer work as a Martial Arts instructor, teaching youth and adults in developing leadership capacity, conflict management, and self-defense skills. My pursuit of life-long learning is currently fulfilled by completing the Simon Fraser University Doctorate in Educational Leadership program. I have instructed in the following nursing courses Pathophysiology, Healing, Lab, Self and Others, Obstetrics, Professional Growth 2220, Community Teaching / Learning, Nurses Influencing Change, and Semester 8.

Rose has been a faculty member in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program since 1998. Her current practice area is care of the older adult experiencing acute and chronic health challenges in both medical and surgical settings, and the community. Her areas of scholarly interest include primary health care, New Science Leadership theory, and literacy. Currently, she and her colleagues from BC and the NWT are engaged in a provincial study to examine the elements of a quality workplace environment for nurse educators.

Deborah is a nurse educator who has been teaching in the BSN Program since 2003. Her background is adult cardio-vascular/thoracic nursing in acute care and health promotion settings. She has taught the health promotion and community development and nursing practice courses applying her significant experience with the preceptorship model of practice education. Deborah represented the BSN Program for the development and implementation of Clinical Teaching Units with Fraser Health at Surrey Memorial Hospital where she continues to facilitate students’ final clinical learning experiences and develop practice education partnerships. Deborah fosters her interest in tobacco health issues by participating in minor research projects and contributing to Kwantlen’s Wellness Center programs and initiatives that promote health and learning for students, such as the Tobacco Free University Initiative. Dr. Balbir Kaur Gurm is the Admissions and Progressions Committees Chair for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program at Kwantlen University College and an award winning educator. Dr. Gurm has been honoured with the Teaching Excellence Award from the College of Registered Nurses of British Columbia and the NISODS Teaching Excellence Award from the University of Texas. Her doctoral dissertation was a social audit of Kwantlen University College. She is currently the editor-in-chief of Kwantlen's electronic journal,Transformative Dialogues: Teaching and Learning Journal,http://www.kwantlen.ca/academicgrowth/TD/ and teaches a fourth year course on social change.
Her research interests include the social determinants of health, teaching and learning and change in organizations. Much of her research focuses on the South Asian community in Surrey. Dr. Gurm has served on many committees. Over the past 13 years she has been a member of the Faculty Performance Review Committee which has developed and implemented a review process with input from faculty and management. She believes that educational experiences need to be grounded in reality and educators need to practice what they teach. Every educational experience needs to connect to the learner’s previous knowledge and educators need to continually change their courses based on feedback and self-reflection.

I am currently involved in the instruction of Semester 5, Nursing Practice 5 NRSG 3141 Pediatric Nursing. I have also instructed in the final preceptorships and obstetrical nursing. My interests include family nursing, women’s health issues, capacity of practice placements and international nursing education. My current engagements include a project in collaboration with BC Children’s Hospital on: Youth Violence: Working Together to Care for Youth and Families.

I have been at Kwantlen for almost two years now and have taught practicum, clinical, and lab skills in the BSN, BPN, GNIE, and GNUR programs. My interests are pain management and orthopedic nursing. I have helped create an on-line pain management course for the Fraser Health Palliative Care Program.

Marion teaches courses which include research and inquiry to third and fourth year nursing students. She conducts research on teen suicide prevention, particularly aboriginal teen suicide prevention, crack cocaine addiction. She is a graduate of Seattle University (BScN), Simon Fraser University (MA) and University of British Columbia (PhD). Marion has 25 published books to her credit which include: Out of the Darkness: Teenagers and Suicide (Arsenal Pulp Press, 2003) and The Face in the Mirror: Teenagers and Adoption (2001). Her on-going research includes: Gang violence in Surrey: Caring enough to act on-going project March 2006 – present- community and academic team, Crack cocaine addiction: Nursing students knowledge and attitudes.
